Every once in a while the beautiful lesson far outweighs the mess.
And there may or may not still be paint splotches dripped all across our little art room {thankfully tiled} floor.
But I knew it was worth it when one little boy whose usual tool of choice is some sort of glowing light-saber or sword or hockey stick – didn’t want to put the paintbrush down.
Although he, or one of his darling sisters, may be the reason for the smear of dark brown paint down the backside of my only pair of non-holey jeans – yes, it’s still worth it. ;)
Because sometimes as Christians we get all puffed up on religion and faith and even grace – but don’t let these truths seep down through to our hearts so they touch our lives. We believe God and His Words, but often don’t do what He tells us to do.
But, here’s the thing – it’s not only about what we believe (and what we hope and pray that our children believe), but it’s also about what we do. For faith without deeds is dead. And we are either growing or we’re decaying.
But when we truly believe, when we soak up His truth, and we taste of His goodness, and we see how very precious we are to Him – we will have this desire to be rid of sin, to grow closer to Him, and to declare His incredible goodness to others.
So, with little hands armed with paintbrushes… this beautiful message is told.
Family {Bible} Time – 1 Peter – Week 5
(Correlates with this week’s 1 Peter 2:1-10 Bible Study.)
With art smocks hanging off of kids, we talked about what we’ve learned about the gospel and God’s amazing grace these last couple of weeks.
And then we began reading 1 Peter 2 – with the first verse listing off sins that we should get rid of because of what God has already done and is doing for us.
As we talked about those sins – they became these yucky dark brown marks all over the (not-quite-so-clean) windows.
And we talked about what this verse says to do with those ugly, dirty sins: “So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech.” (1 Peter 2:1NLT). And how, it’s only Jesus that can purify us (remember- no striving, jumping, balancing Bibles… can save us!?), but how we have a part too. For, Jesus does the cleansing, but He still tells us to be done with sin.
So pretty soon all those “sins” were being wiped off and thrown in the trash. (And, no worries, the tempera paint came off great with just a little soap and water.)
And as the next nine verses were read with little eyes big and wondering, we were reminded of His goodness and how precious we who believe are to Him.
So precious that we are called His very own possessions. So that we can declare His praises, showing others the goodness of God (from verse 9).
And with shiny, bright colors we painted His goodness right there on the window –
As if you could see His glorious light shining right through.
