When There is No Time for Family Devotions

It’s been said that we make time for the things that are most important to us.

The people. The hobbies. The values. The faith.

It just might look a little (or a lot) differently than we envisioned.

This week it looked a whole lot like reading some verses to kids piled in between blankets and overflowing backpacks in our new-ish van. (Yes, we are now that family!)

It was this sweet scent of His Words mixed in the with the aroma of McDonald’s chicken nuggets and peppermint oil (because it helps with motion sickness – the peppermint, not the nuggets).

we are that family

Family {Bible} Time1 Peter – Week 10
(Corresponds with this week’s 1 Peter 4:12-19 Bible Study.)

In my mind I could see us stopping at a park to make up some little obstacle course with “trials” to overcome (and to rejoice in) as we talked about how the trials we face as Christians today will lead to glory in the future. (See 1 Peter 4:12-19.)

Or, maybe I’d at least come up with some fun name game we could play during the ten hour drive home. Then somehow I’d relate that to the preciousness of bearing the name of Christ.

But, the closest we got was battling our way through rush hour traffic and calling out the different state names on license plates, and there was the trial of getting everyone back in and strapped after a lunch break.

we are that family

Really, we just read those eight verses and came up with a few biblical examples of people who suffered for being a Christian (Stephen, Peter, Paul, John…). And that was it. It took five – maybe ten – minutes.

I share this because I know how easy it can be to look at all the pictures and fun that others are having learning about God and His Word (or anything really) and think that your family doesn’t measure up, or that you’re not doing enough.

And you’ve seen our family painting windows and dressing up and going on crazy-fun-camera-taking-scavenger-hunts. And I love these times with my family. I love to help these precious kiddos of mine understand biblical truths in creative, fun ways. But often times the sweetest times are the moments without the flashiness or the flare.

When it’s just us – reading His Words – soaking in His Truth while snuggled on the couch, or together at the park, or driving down the highway.

So, make time this week for God and for sharing your faith with your kids.

Maybe you’ll get to make some awesome obstacle course or will get brave with glitter and glue or will come up with some other incredible idea.

Or maybe you’ll sit piled on the couch or in the car listening to a few short life-breathing verses.

Either way, I’d love to hear the big and the oh-so-little ways you’re sharing the gospel with your family.
