So there are storms that blow fierce,
And depression that creeps through cracks.
There are bullies and frizzy hair and sisters that make your little eight year old heart bust right open.
And there are parents that leave and best friends that betray. And who would have thought that the pain would go so much deeper than a skinned knee?
For nobody has a bandage big enough to fix words of just wanting to die being whispered in the flames or screamed in the darkness.
And maybe nobody really ever knows what to say because glory looks a whole lot better than sitting in the shadows with no way out.
And I don’t have the answers.
I don’t know why even little minds get lost in the rubble –
Why young lives suffer deeply –
Why even a three-year-old worries about the darkness and the thunder and her parents up and leaving her every time she’s left with a babysitter.
And this verse can sound a whole lot like a pat answer.
“Cast all your anxieties on Him because He cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:7
But that word “anxiety” – it’s this fracturing into parts. A whole lot like what’s going on inside most of us.
And that word “cast” – it means to throw upon.
It’s trusting God enough to throw all our brokenness on Him all because He cares for us.
And I’m left speechless, for the God who made the stars and the world and the six little ones that call me mama – He cares for me!… For you!

So we read His Words, even when they’re hard to fathom.
And we scribble these anxieties on broken pieces of rock.
Then we head across the street to throw them as far as we can into the glistening pond – just like we’re casting them on the Lord.
When we walk back it doesn’t take long for the anxieties to creep in again, to try and strangle the life and joy right out of us.
So we keep a pile of rocks close by.
I see a lot of precious trips to the pond in our near future.
